Bold future
For co-founder and Creative Director of The Manicure Company Eoin Cotter, summer is all about graphic looks and lines. “Summer will be full of graphic nail art that incorporates negative space designs as well as creative takes on the classic French manicures and ombre sets,” says Eoin. He also points out that one of the benefits of lockdown has been how it allowed pro’s to take the time to really perfect their nail art.
He says lines are going to be a key trend this summer:
“We’re seeing lots of graphic lines in bright colours applied over a natural or sheer base and the two trends together really make for a beautiful statement.
“Over the past months short nails have been popular but I think the summer will see a return to longer lengths as clients prepare for staycations.
“I think both clients and techs have plenty of pent-up creativity within them, so the season is set to be bold, bright and lots of fun.”

Looking back
Julie-Anne Larivière is Salon System’s Nail Expert and the owner of Sketched by J-A Nails and she says trend prediction means keeping an eye on social media. “While the pandemic sort of created a halt on everything, including a lot of trends, it’s a good idea to watch what is being dictated by influencers in the nail world,” says Julie-Anne.
“Someone will create something and boom, all of a sudden it’s the next big thing! This means it’s super important for anyone in the nail industry to keep a close eye on social platforms, especially Instagram, if they want to keep up to date.”
For Julie-Anne, the key trends will be still be tortoiseshell, the French manicure, stone/marble effects and mismatched nail art. After experimenting throughout lockdown, many nail techs are unleashing their creative talent and throwing out the rule book, mixing and matching a range of techniques and styles, such as negative space, geometric or animal print designs. Julie-Anne says it’s also a mixed bag when it comes to nail shape, as clients will embrace everything from long coffins to short squares.
When it comes to colour choices, Julie-Anne says: “Think bright and bold; oranges, blues and bright pinks but muted nudes will also shine.”
A bright return
For Holly Rox, nail technician at Edinburgh’s Mark David Salon it’s clear that brights are the future. “After conducting a poll on my Instagram, 86 percent of my clients said they planned on choosing a bright colour for their first appointment back in the salon,” says Holly. And those brights are sitting alongside the increasingly popular trend for pastel tones.
Holly says, “Pastels have been massive, whether it’s one colour or using a selection or using them to create a French manicure. But I also think metallics will be huge. There’s been a return to using chrome powders, as they give such an amazing, reflective finish and can easily be combined with different colours, plus they’re easily incorporated into a Gel Manicure.”
Holly says gold detailing will also be a huge trend, but perhaps even more importantly, the desire for hand and nail treatments is on the rise.
“With the increased hand washing and sanitising, clients are keen to work on improving the condition of their hands. I offer a Hand & Nail Treatment as so many clients are dealing with dry skin and cuticles. The treatment includes a gentle exfoliation, hand mask and an extra nourishing hand balm; it’s all about offering the ultimate pampering treatment to reveal noticeable results on the hands,” says Holly.
