Embracing Grey: Expert Tips on Perfecting the Grey Hair Blend Trend

The rise in grey hair blending has taken the hair world by storm, with over 62% of our followers in a recent poll saying their clients are more eager than ever to embrace their grey! But how can you help them achieve this look? We spoke with Lizzie Fox, a hairdresser with 22 years of experience and a grey hair specialist, to get her top tips on mastering the grey hair blend.

Hi Lizzie! Tell us a little about your business and how you found your niche through grey hair blending.

I made the move nearly three years ago to create Lizzie Fox Hair and became self-employed within a beautiful studio, which has been the highlight and best decision of my career. Being able to choose how and when I work gives me the work-life balance I craved when I was employed. I pride myself on creating natural-looking colours, whether it's a lived-in look or my popular grey blending service. I love empowering women to embrace their confidence by transforming their hair.

I’ve always incorporated some form of grey blending into my work—I just didn’t call it that! Many of my clients wanted to transition from permanent colour, and grey blending provided a seamless way to do so. Since the pandemic, I’ve noticed a growing awareness of grey blending, as it gave clients the option to embrace and blend their natural colour rather than simply growing it out. This shift inspired me to evolve my technique by further educating myself, refining my approach, and mastering new methods to create the most natural and flattering results for my clients.

What is your advice for deciding how much of your client’s natural grey to add? Can you explain your consultation process?

I always have an in-depth consultation to find out my client’s wants, needs, and desires. From this, I determine which technique to use. For the majority of clients, I follow their natural grey pattern. This ensures the colour blends as naturally as possible and creates a low-maintenance look, as the grow-out will mimic their roots.

I also assess each client’s skin tone and eye colour to determine the perfect shade for their hair. I’ve found that as their natural hair continues to grow in, the tone can evolve, making the transition even more complementary throughout their journey.

It can be a nerve-wracking process for some clients to embrace their natural grey. How do you reassure hesitant clients about transitioning to grey blending?

Some clients feel apprehensive about "feeling grey." I take the time to understand why they want to embrace their grey and focus on that as the focal point rather than simply "going grey." Grey blending doesn’t mean going grey—it’s about incorporating the white within the colour and learning to embrace it.

Many of my clients truly fall in love with their natural colour, and it’s incredible to watch their journey. I cover all the essential information for both clients and hairdressers who want to learn more about grey blending in my Grey Blending Handbook. It’s packed with advice, tips, and encouragement to help navigate the transition. (Linked in my Instagram bio: https://www.instagram.com/lizziefoxhair/ )

Why do you think there has been such a surge in clients opting for this look?

I honestly think women are just tired of the constant upkeep of covering their roots. Now that grey blending has become more visible on social media, it’s becoming more acceptable to embrace your grey.

For so long, women have faced the stigma that grey hair makes them look older. In reality, when styled and cared for properly, grey or white hair is a truly beautiful colour. More and more clients are embracing their natural tones—and they absolutely love the results!

What are some of the most common mistakes hairdressers make when attempting grey blending, and how can they avoid them?

One of the biggest misjudgements is using colours that are too light to blend the white. For most clients, this creates either a darker root (especially if they are naturally brunette) or a warm fade, as permanent colour can lift the undercoat too high and then fade brassy.

Another common mistake is weaving highlights too thick or not fine enough, which prevents an optimal lift and leaves a visible demarcation line.

What are your go-to products for achieving this look?

I always rely on the YS Park tail combs, they are perfect for creating precise weaves and slices. I also incorporate the K18 routine into my services to ensure maximum protection when lifting.

What is your advice for hairdressers who want to master the art of grey blending?

If you have clients asking about their options and you’re unsure where to start, always begin with a thorough consultation. Find out what they like and dislike—it could be the tone, the depth, or more than likely, the line where their natural hair meets the coloured hair.

Small changes, like switching from permanent to demi-permanent colour and matching it to their natural depth, can help blend their hair more seamlessly as it grows out.

If you’re introducing highlights, place them where the grey naturally appears and ensure they are very fine. When toning, neutralise warmth first, then personalise the toner to complement their skin tone.

Also, allow the toner to develop fully—this can take up to 20 minutes. Proper development ensures the ultimate colour result and long-lasting effects.
