Rainbow Bright!
The pastel hair trend isn’t going anywhere – it’s a great, (mostly) commitment-free way to play with colour. It was most likely catwalk model Charlotte Free (@charlotte_free) who caused the hashtag #mylittlepony to go crazy on social media platforms like Instagram, almost two years ago now. Charlotte is a real DIY hair colour at home lover, and often mixes up her own blends of blues, greens, corals and pinks. Inspired by eighties children’s toys, mostly My Little Pony and Rainbow Bright (do you remember?) as well as the cartoon Jem And the Holograms – which is currently being turned into a feature film – the rainbow hair trend has become a great go-to for festival-goers who want to play with colour without the commitment.
But it’s also celebrities who are playing with the trend. Most aren’t quite as brave as Charlotte however, and instead, actresses like Kate Hudson and Hilary Duff are opting for single tones; Kate going for a pale pink wash and Hilary playing with a mermaid green.
The difference between the celebs and DIY-lovers like Charlotte is of course, a professional’s input. Crazy colours are always going to appeal, and right now they’re having a huge moment, but it’s you, the professionals, that can show clients how to play with colour without having to deal with unsightly regrowth or toners gone bad! Rainbow bright shades require regular toning touch-ups, and if it’s on a bleached blonde base, it’s likely that roots will need doing. By all means help your clients play with their wild side; done correctly, it means they will keep coming back to the colourist they trust, which can only mean positive things when it comes to your weekly column.
Experiment with colour using Osmo’s Color Psycho range in 7 Wild Brights. Add the Color Tamer for unlimited tamed pastel effects.
