Winter & Christmas Nail Trends
In this week’s blog we’re going to take a look at some festive upcoming nail design ideas and the most on-trend colours to wear this season, as well as tips and advice on the best ways to care for your nails as the cold weather starts to set in.
Winter nail colours to watch
The festive season is one of the most popular times of the year for manicures. Everyone wants their nails looking good for Christmas, so expect to be getting super busy over the next few weeks! Not sure where to start with colour recommendations? Perhaps the most obvious one is a classic red, the perfect colour for Christmas! For a bit of extra sparkle, why not add a red glitter polish on top?! If you’re looking for the perfect one, The Manicure Company have just released their brand new Limited Edition Xmas Edition, featuring Naughty List, the most perfect red glitter polish we’ve ever seen!
Another wintery colour with a Christmassy feel to it is dark green. We love this forest green set of nails from 101outfit.com, complete with glitter to give it that extra sparkle! If your clients usually go for something more muted and understand, white with a hint of gold is a great winter colour combo too. Or, if they want something with a bit more of a party feel, why not suggest an ombre glitter look? These coffin nails by @nailsbysab on Instagram are ticking all the boxes for us!
Festive Christmas nail designs
There are endless possibilities for seasonal themed nail art at this time of year. Some of our favourite ideas for simpler designs include stars, candy canes, strings of Christmas lights and baubles. Or, if you love nail art and are confident in creating more complex designs, why not try snowmen, elves, Christmas trees, little Santas or even reindeer painted on the tip of the nail?
One of our favourite designs we’ve come across is this cute present/wrapping paper combo from countryliving.com. We love that they’ve used such festive colours too! The present design is really easy to recreate, even if nail art isn’t your strongest point. You could even add nail gems to the centre of the bow to make it that little bit extra!
Our ultimate favourite festive nail designs have to be the two below, brought to us by @drybylondon. The first design is this set of nude nails with white snowflakes and a hint of silver foiling. The second, a deep blue with an intricate silver snowflake. Not only are they festive and wintery, they’re super chic and perfect for any festive occasion. They’re giving us all the Christmassy feels!
These designs can be created using regular nail polish or with gel polish if your clients want a longer lasting manicure. If you’ve not used gel polish before or want to strengthen your skills, why not consider one of our training courses? Our The Manicure Company Gel Polish Course is only £75 + VAT and covers theory (health and safety as well as anatomy of the nail), application and removal of gel polish.
How to take care of nails in winter
With winter comes cold weather which can leave your hands, nails and cuticles feeling dry and irritated. If you can, make sure you’re booked in for regular manicures throughout the season to ensure your nails and hands stay well looked after and don’t suffer any damage. If you don’t have the time to do this (or the funds - this time of year can be particularly expensive!) there are many other ways to care for your hands and nails.
Our products of choice are cuticle oil and hand and nail cream. The OPI Pro Spa range is a particular favourite of ours. The OPI ProSpa Protect Hand Nail Cuticle Cream comes in a handy 50ml size you can keep in your handbag, as well as a larger 236ml tube which you can use on your manicure clients. It’s the same with their OPI ProSpa Nail & Cuticle Oil. They do a little 7.5ml tube to keep with you on the go, as well as a 28ml bottle for use in your salon/on your clients.

Chantelle: Capital & Me, my self-employed journey & the importance of networking
Introducing Chantelle, a talented beautician, hair extension specialist and proud owner of ‘Chantelle’s Beautique’. We sit down with Chantelle as she tells us how she started out in the industry, her top tips for becoming self-employed, struggles she faced and overcame along the way and her favourite products that she can’t live without!
My treatment room is based in my garden at home and I offer a full range of Hair and Beauty treatments specialising in skin care, brows & hair extensions. My clients love my set up and really appreciate the little touches like being able to park with ease and having more of a cosy experience away from the hustle and bustle of a busy salon. As well as running my own business at home, I also enjoy teaching others on their journey starting out in the trade with my own accredited courses at home as another branch of my business called ‘The Hair and Beauty Training Beautique’. You may also see me in your local Capital Hair & Beauty as I also tutor for one of their training providers ‘Face Forward’ offering brow lamination and lash lift and tint courses.
Meet Sophie, owner of ‘Sophie’s Lashes & Beauty’ which she has been running now for over 7 years!
Sophie gained a wealth of experience working in the industry from her background working in prestigious 5 hotel & spa and salon settings which lead her up to starting a business of her own. We talk about all things beauty and the curved tweezers that she can’t live without!
Hi Sophie, tell us a little bit about your journey and how you go into the industry and what lead up to starting out on your own?
I gained a lot of knowledge from working in different settings from working with a big teams in a 5 star hotels and spas to smaller beauty salon environments. I gained so much knowledge from working in both settings and although it was hard work and long hours.
I started out by working in a few different 5 star hotels with spas and a salons where I gained all my knowledges and experiences from each one to put together for my own business! It was hard work and long hours all the practice paid off. It was actually one of my clients I saw regularly in the salon I worked at that said I should set up on my own and gave me the confidence to go self-employed and I’ve not looked back since!
Something Old - Something New
Does the bob ever go out of style? Short answer: No. The reason for the evergreen appeal of the bob is because, depending on the length, it’s a look that can suit any face shape or hair texture. Right now, it can be anything from a short and swingy French girl bob, a luxurious long bob, or a razor-cut curly bob. For Tori Kiff, it’s about keeping things fresh with the addition of a fringe.
“I love updating a classic curly bob with a fringe, especially as so many of my curly clients seem to think it’s a style they shouldn’t have. I’ve managed to show so many clients that it’s all down to fear and that actually, a curly bob is so flattering and easy to style; I advise them to use their fingers to curl their fringes or to use a brush when styling,” shares Tori.
Of course, the most modern way to wear a bob is the Bixie, a hybrid of the bob and pixie; think classic bob updated with a fringe or micro bangs, or you could play with the Butterfly Bob. RUSH Creative Director Andy Heasman’s a fan.
